Phil's Childhood

                                                                  A couple of School photo's

I was brought up on a council estate back in the 50's. As a child back then times were hard & we had to make our own enjoyment.

Was a typical boy who used to strip down old prams for the wheels & axels to make trolleys, would use planks of wood for the frame and a large nail for the steering.

I would also make up bike's from the old ones which had been dumped in the fields.

A gang of us would make underground camps in the two woods near by, but mainly Perrywood close to the Marley Banks near Redhill Estate. The posh area as we used to call it!, Who would have thought, one day I would having been buying a house on that same estate. The clay soil in Perrywood made the sides stronger & there were lots of ferns for the roof, the flooring was good clean sacking, such fun days.

During the long hot summers in the fields near Nunnery Wood, close to the old pond, once the tractor had mowed, we would  rake up the hay into a large hay stack, tie some rope to a old oak tree, then swing into the hay then let go! simple pleasures but such happy days.

As I started to get older we would get over the fence at the school playing field & play football all afternoon in the nets until we got chased off by the school caretaker on his BSA bantam motorbike.

Joined the Boys Brigade & learned to play the bugle, after training in the evening I would pass the Baptist church hall & hear the music playing & seeing the girls dancing.

The youth club was run by Sister Nancy a lovely lady she went to become a missionary.

Joined the youth club & became a Mod & would dance to the music of the time.

More on the music I enjoy on the Music page.
